External decorating that survives a Manchester winter

Outside work is judged over years rather than days. A good exterior job still looks sound after five or six winters. A bad one starts flaking by the second spring, usually because it went on over a damp or dirty surface, or because the weather turned while it was still curing.

So we start with the boring part. Render and masonry get washed down and any loose or blown material cut out and made good. Timber is scraped back to a sound edge, sanded, knotted and primed. Bare or chalky surfaces get a stabilising solution. Moss and organic growth is treated, not just painted over, because it will come back through the coating if it is left.

Picking the weather

Most exterior coatings want a dry surface, temperatures above about 8°C, and enough hours before dew or rain to touch dry. In the North West that realistically means April to October for the bulk of the work, with a decent settled spell either side. We would rather move your start date by a week than put a coat on that will not bond, and we will say so when we book you in.

What we cover outside

  • Render and pebbledash, including repairs before painting
  • Brick and stone masonry
  • Soffits, fascias, bargeboards and guttering
  • Timber and uPVC windows and doors
  • Garage doors, gates and railings
  • Porches, canopies and conservatory frames
  • Cladding, weatherboard and timber outbuildings
  • Rotten timber repaired rather than replaced

Where we find soft or rotten timber in a frame or fascia, we can usually repair it in place with a Repair Care resin system instead of replacing the whole unit. There is more on that on our timber resin repairs page.
