Internal decorating in Bollington

Bollington is a former mill village on the edge of the Peak District, and the housing is largely stone-built Victorian terraces and cottages, with newer estates on the outskirts.

Cottage interiors here bring their own challenges. Rooms are often smaller with lower ceilings, walls are frequently thick stone with old lime plaster, and very little is truly straight or square. Filling a wall like that flat is not always the right answer — sometimes it is better to work with the character of the surface and choose a finish that suits it. We will give you an honest view on which approach fits your room.

Damp and breathability matter more in solid stone walls than in a cavity-built house. Sealing an old wall behind a heavy vinyl paper or a non-breathable coating traps moisture and causes flaking within a year or two. Where that is a risk we will say so and suggest something more suitable.

Exposed beams, staircases and original doors come up regularly, and all of them repay being done carefully rather than quickly.
